This zine experiments by juxtaposing the dense, challenging landscape of Egypt, Ohio’s Great Black Swamp with the intense, heated emotions of an LGBTQ+ ice hockey rivalry. It pairs textured narrative fragments and atmospheric visuals that evoke the swamp’s oppressive stillness with dynamic, energetic bursts inspired by the drama and passion of the televised hockey series. The project explores how vastly different environments—one natural and stagnant, the other competitive and charged—can coexist in a playful, slightly surreal dialogue. It emerged from these texts as both speak to niche, intimate communities facing their own struggles, whether geographic or emotional, creating an odd but compelling mix of place and passion.
